We got this item cheaper at Amazon compared to a local Thule dealer, including free shipping. The shipping took some days longer than expected but OK, it was for free.
The Thule Ascent 1500 fits perfectly on the Tiguan 09 roof, equipped with the original VW cross bars. No problem to open the tail gate and the moon roof. We looked for a medium size roof box just for additional luggage like bags and small containers. Because it is not that long, it isn't designed for long skis but we dont need the box for ski holidays. It has locks on both sides plus two fixing belts inside. This fixing belts have plastic buckles only also the fixing points inside the box are of plastic. Not bad but could be more solid. I have seen a test on german internet pages ([...]) and they showed poor results for a Thule box in a crash test, e.g. the goods broke the front and flew out of the box. In a later test, Thule fixed the problems by better fixing belts. Maybe this is ony for the german models.
Overall, this US model looks good, the quick fix system is nice and the mounting on the roof is very easy. One need just another's help to put it up, but I was able to move it back down again just by myself.
I agree with all the positive reviews here. This thing is great. It is light weight yet strong, and easy to install. I bought this model because it does not use "U" bolts to fasten to the roof rack even though it was a little more money than some other models. It is so easy to work with I cant believe it. I now have lots of space and comfort in the car without all the clutter and when I don't need it I can have it off the roof in 5 minutes. Oh and free shipping is a big plus I don't know how they do it?
